Art in Schools
Rincon High School
In April 2006, I spent 3 days at Rincon High School in Tucson, Arizona
under the guidance of resident art teacher Mary Parry.
I taught 2 classes of students
a self portrait project which aimed to get students thinking about
their self identity, as well as the connections they had to others.
Students used drawing, collage, design and photography techniques
to create a visual representation of themselves.. After completing
their portraits, the students discussed each piece, and consequently
learned about their classmates and commonalities among the group.
Later, the square portraits were compiled to form a tile mural,
and hung in the school library.
University of Arizona
In the Fall of 2005, I taught 3 classes of Art 101: Introduction
to Drawing, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Melanie Yazzie.
The project used texture rubbings to create 2 collages: an in-class
still life, and a homework collage of the students' choice. Students'
homework collages included self portraits, landscapes and abstract
representations of ideas.
